Planning, Instruction, and Assessment

These slides are followed by references/ and a rationale for slide infographics – to explain the relationship of image color and shape to curriculum theory.

A Rationale:

Reading the diagrams for Approaches to Curriculum Planning, Instruction and Assessment Images.

Planning = Green, Instruction = Blue, Learner Performance = Red, Assessment = Yellow

While it is comforting to know that there are many overlaps in process and evaluation, as a visual learner it helps us to see these steps from planning to assessment as connecting shapes and colours, in a way which clearly outlines some of their different approaches. To describe a Learner Centred approach in curriculum, we started with green at the centre indicating the Planning Phase. This fans outwards into Instruction Phase indicated in blue. The Instruction Phase fans out into an additional phase  – which we called a Learner Performance Phase, indicated in red – marking the beginning of the Assessment Phase in yellow. Overlaps regularly occur as goals are evaluated and le

Overlaps occur when the different phases appear to move into each other. Indicating this is a cyclical process and activity oriented.  Also, in the Learner Centred approach, the Learner Performance Phase (red) is larger than the Assessment Phase (yellow); this is very different if you compare this diagram with the adjacent Subject Centred Approach diagram, which has a dominant Assessment Phase (yellow), and the same diagram also has less overlap between Planning Phase and Instruction Phase which are seen as separate and very specific.

In the third diagram – Problem Centred Approach – the Planning Phase is immediately focussed onto problem solving with a social agenda (indicated by the blue and black squares – teaching to the task, and outcomes based) the Instruction Phase (Blue) and Learner Performance Phase(red) are also interrupted by the squares, a wave to Ralston Saul’s video, about teaching utilitarianism in overly standardized testing. Perhaps it’s a little unfair but it did help us remember the distinctions – the cog-like wheels of Assessment Phase (yellow) and the return to Instruction Phase (blue). This contrasts with Subject Centred Approaches which move from Assessment Phase right back into Planning Phase in a cyclical motion.

Planning Phase= Green

Instruction Phase = Blue

Learner Performance Phase = Red

Assessment = Yellow
